Jeep’s Most Successful Model Doesn’t Even Have A Jeep Badge

Key Takeaways

  • Stellantis Q2 2024 sales are down 21% in the USA; only Alfa Romeo and Fiat brands experienced growth.
  • Sales of the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer soared, while other Jeep models declined.
  • Stellantis leads the plug-in hybrid segment with four of the five top-selling PHEVs.

Stellantis has posted its Q2 and H1 sales for 2024, with overall group sales plummeting by 21% and 16%, respectively, in the USA. All brands, except for Alfa Romeo and Fiat, saw a decline in sales. Among the Jeep, Dodge, Ram, and Chrysler brands, the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are the only individual models that enjoyed soaring sales, making them Jeep’s best-selling vehicles even though they don’t wear Jeep badged (although that will soon change).

An impressive 16,734 Wagoneers were sold in Q2 2024, an increase of 107% compared to the same period last year. That’s remarkable when considering the full-size SUV’s base MSRP of $62,945. Grand Wagoneer sales have also increased, with 4,005 examples leaving showroom floors in the second quarter. This represents a 24% uptick in sales. While this is a positive start, the rest of the lineup has dismal sales in comparison.

Just About Every Stellantis Vehicle Has Poorer Sales Figures

The worst offender by far is the Cherokee, which saw an 89% decline in sales. Of course, the Cherokee was killed off earlier this year, which explains the lower figures, but that hit alone has severely affected Jeep. The Renegade (also discontinued) saw a 69% reduction in sales, with just 1,583 units sold in Q2. Even the popular Wrangler and Grand Cherokee suffered reduced sales; the Wrangler managed 38,896 sales (-17%), while the Grand Cherokee came in at 52,296 (-26%).

But CEO Antonio Filosa still has big plans for the Toledo-based brand.

Despite this, Stellantis leads the plug-in hybrid segment, with the Wrangler 4xe, Grand Cherokee 4xe, Dodge Hornet R/T, and Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid all ranking in the top five best-selling PHEVs in America. The Wrangler 4xe accounted for 39% of Wrangler sales, while 12% of all Grand Cherokees were 4xe variants. With the Hornet, 46% of customers opted for the PHEV, while 21% of Pacifica sales came from hybrids. It’s worth noting that there are plans to introduce a Gladiator 4xe at a later date.

What About The Rest Of The Stellantis Lineup?

The most popular car in the Stellantis stable was the Ram 1500, with 90,109 examples sold during Q2 2024. Comparatively, Chevrolet sold 100,160 Silverado Light Duty trucks during the same period. In terms of percentage improvements, it’s hard to beat the new Fiat 500e; sales increased by a whopping 16,200%. That’s because Fiat sold 163 examples in Q2 2024, up from just one car during the same period last year.

Despite being discontinued, the aging Challenger and Charger duo reached five-figure sales in Q2 2024, with 11,480 and 16,216 examples sold, respectively. With the new electric Charger on the horizon, it will be interesting to see how the new era of Dodge muscle cars sells compared to the outgoing cars. With any luck, sales of Stellantis cars will increase in the second half of the year. Introducing a new Cherokee will undoubtedly help, as will the planned $25,000 Jeep-branded electric vehicle.
