Key Takeaways
- Ineos Automotive arrives at the Goodwood Festival of Speed with several specially modified Grenadier concepts.
- Concepts include a V8-powered Grenadier, a race-ready variant, and a smaller pickup based on the Grenadier SUV.
- None of these vehicles have been earmarked for production, but Ineos says they give a “glimpse of potential future Grenadier variants.”
The Goodwood Festival of Speed is finally underway, and for the next few days, a small piece of West Sussex, UK, will become a place for automakers to show off their latest toys and concepts. Ineos Automotive is one of them and is coming to the Festival of Speed with a selection of unique concepts designed to showcase the versatility of the rugged platform.
Working with its retail partner, German firm LeTech GmbH & Co KG, Ineos has made the Grenadier and Quartermaster even more capable off-road by raising their chassis and fitting portal axles and offset wheel hubs. As a result, the ride height has increased considerably, with an extra 9.84 inches pushing the total ground clearance to a lofty 20.2 inches. The wading depth has also been improved to 41.3 inches. And this isn’t just a silly concept designed to turn heads. Ineos says the portal axle-equipped Grenadier has “real-world applications,” with similar vehicles being delivered to a fire department in Mühlheim an der Ruhr, Germany.

From Tiny Trucks To V8-Powered SUVs, There’s Something For Everyone
The Quartermaster pick-up is a very practical truck, but if it is slightly too big, perhaps the affectionately named ‘Shortermaster’ will pique your interest. Created by Ineos’ in-house engineers, the tiny truck is actually based on a Grenadier Station Wagon body style, with a shorter 115-inch wheelbase – 12 inches fewer than the Quartermaster. The load bay is integrated into the chassis, making this a unibody pickup like the Rivian R1T, Honda Ridgeline, and Hyundai Santa Cruz. The rear seats have been repositioned to maximize the carrying capacity of the bed.

If the current crop of BMW-sourced inline-six engines doesn’t do it for you, Ineos has been playing around with the concept of a V8-powered Grenadier. This one-off project, created by Magna Steyr apprentices, gains motivation from a General Motors 6.2-liter V8 that develops 425 horsepower and 461 lb-ft of torque. That’s 143 more ponies than you’d get in the gas-powered six-cylinder and a lot more torque. A lot of work went into shoehorning the larger V8 under the hood. The engine electronics, water and oil cooling, exhaust manifold and rear silencer, heat shields, engine mounts, transmission bearings, and even the center console had to be re-engineered to accommodate the larger motor.
“The Grenadier’s body-on-frame chassis has already proven itself to be incredibly versatile, so as we look to future product and limited editions, we want to keep innovating. As our new brand campaign states, the Grenadier is Built For More, and over the next few years we will be showing just what that means.”
– Lynn Calder, CEO, INEOS Automotive
Race-Ready Grenadier Looks Ready To Conquer The World Rally Raid
Also in attendance will be a specially designed Safari eight-seater. Built by Ineos Kavango, the purpose-built vehicle is based on the Quartermaster pickup and is ideal for safari duties. This is just one example of what Ineos Kavango can do, with special modifications to assist in specialist roles, from anti-poaching and conservation to healthcare and veterinary needs.

This limited run Grenadier gets an extra dose of style from Belstaff.
Perhaps the most exciting build is the FIA-Compliant Grenadier. Developed by Buzz Special Vehicles, this version receives an uprated version of the standard inline-six, now producing 349 hp and 406 lb-ft. Aside from that, the race-ready Grenadier is equipped with stronger brakes, a sports exhaust system, and racing suspension. The interior has been stripped out to save weight, with carbon fiber interior door trim, racing bucket seats, and a full roll cage replacing all the usual fittings. Ineos says it has been modified to compete in the 2025 World Rally-Raid Championship.
A Sign Of Things To Come?
While Ineos hasn’t expressed an interest in putting any of these concepts in production, the company describes them as a “glimpse of potential future Grenadier variants.” The automaker is testing the waters with these one-offs to see how the public responds to them. One thing is sure – American consumers would love a V8-powered Grenadier, especially one sourced from GM. Ineos plans to introduce two new models by 2027: a smaller SUV and a larger off-roader. It’s worth noting that the automaker has shelved plans for the electrified Fusilier indefinitely owing to waning demand for electric cars.
