There’s Another Super Cheap Way To Get Mustang GTD Power

Key Takeaways

  • Roush offers a limited-edition supercharger upgrade for $9,995, providing 810 horsepower and 630 lb-ft of torque.
  • The kit includes an ingenious design with front-driven TVS R2650 supercharger and custom front-end accessory drive.
  • Other alternatives for 800 hp include Ford Performance and Lethal Performance kits, as well as complete cars from Shelby and Saleen.

Nearly two years ago, Mustang engineers said it would be very difficult to tune the S650, but in 2024, the number of options available to the muscle car enthusiast seeking more power has ballooned, and the latest costs less than 10 grand. Roush has developed a limited-edition supercharger upgrade (how many will be available has not been revealed) that develops 810 hp and 630 lb-ft of twist for just $9,995 – free shipping included.

If you’re less than handy with a wrench, you’ll need to spend a little more for installation, but either way, you’re going to have supercar power for far less money than Ford would charge for the privilege. In case you missed it, being part of the ambitious Mustang GTD project costs customers over $300,000 each.

2024 Roush Mustang Phase 2 Supercharger Upgrade Ingenious Design

Roush’s kit includes a front-driven TVS R2650 supercharger fed by the same stock 80mm throttle bodies you’d get on a stock Gen 4 Coyote engine. This allows the engine bay to retain an OEM feel thanks to its symmetrical appearance and allows the stock induction parts to be reused. One of the smartest ideas is the inverted design that allows space for dual intercoolers, and another is a custom front-end accessory drive/serpentine belt design, which allows the supercharger belt to run closer to the engine, thereby reducing extremity loads on the crankshaft. As a result, the engine should be more reliable and durable, pushing 13 psi of boost at 7,500 rpm day in and day out.

Naturally, other elements are responsible for reliability, too, such as an upgraded heat exchanger (which your installer will be glad to know does not require the removal of the front fascia) and a larger degas bottle/coolant expansion tank. This is both larger and more efficient and is supported by custom hoses. Also worth mentioning are the high-flow Bosch PCE intercooler pump, high-flow injectors connected to billet fuel rails, and colder, tighter Ford Performance spark plugs. All the wiring is plug-and-play, and the tuning software is easily uploaded. The kit isn’t yet 50-state CARB EO legal but is SEMA-certified emissions compliant.

Several Other Alternatives On Offer

Roush is a big name in the V8 tuning industry, but it’s not the only one, and it’s not even the only one that offers around 800 hp for five figures. The Ford Performance supercharger upgrade has an identical price and delivers identical horsepower, albeit with a 15 lb-ft torque deficit. There’s also a kit from Lethal Performance delivering 807 hp and 635 lb-ft for $9,995. Of course, if you’d rather not go through all the effort of messing with the oily bits, you can buy a complete car from Shelby or an 800-h-/660-lb-ft Saleen 302 Black Label for six figures. Can’t choose? Perhaps a video from Roush will help raise your pulse; 13 psi of boost isn’t a huge amount, but it’s enough for that distinctive supercharger whine to be ever-present.

Roush’s Claim:

“Enjoy a straightforward installation process with a design that requires no modifications to the K member or removal of the front fascia for the front mount or low-temperature radiator. With our comprehensive installation guide and the right tools, you’ll have your supercharger kit installed in no time, ready to unleash the full potential of your Mustang.

Designed for ease of installation, the kit reuses stock 2x 80mm throttle bodies, retains symmetrical appearance, and allows for the reuse of stock induction components. All hoses are custom-formed for the ultimate ease of installation and underhood appearance. The high-flow Bosch PCE intercooler pump and plug-and-play wiring ensure a straightforward installation process.”
