Cadillac Sollei Is America’s Answer To The Rolls-Royce Droptail

Key Takeaways

  • Cadillac reveals the gorgeous Sollei concept, a luxury electric convertible that combines the company’s past and present.
  • Breathtakingly beautiful styling borrows elements from the Celestiq sedan.
  • No word yet on whether the Sollei will enter production.

Full-size luxury convertibles are scarce in today’s automotive landscape, but Cadillac may be reviving the segment with the gorgeous Sollei, an all-electric concept that celebrates the automaker’s legacy of high-end convertibles. Cadillac says the design pushes the envelope of “future bespoke commissions,” which suggests the Sollei may make it to production – perhaps as a bespoke Spectre rival built in limited numbers. Sollei is a portmanteau of sun (Sol) and leisure (Lei), which is what this vehicle is all about.

The Sollei is an exceptionally elegant motorcar with graceful lines flowing from stem to stern. Devoid of any frivolous design details, the long, uninterrupted lines highlight the vehicle’s size, lending it an old-world charm and grandeur missing from many finicky modern designs. The headlight and taillight are subtly connected by a mid-body line that also gives the sides of the Sollei plenty of shape.

An Elegantly-Styled Electric Convertible

The side profile is clutter-free, with no pesky door handles to detract from the shape, Instead, the door handles have been replaced with small buttons. Cadillac has chosen ‘Manila Cream’ for the concept; this color was previously used on Cadillacs in 1957 and 1958 and was hand-painted by the automaker’s talented craftspeople. We’d love to see what the Sollei would look like in Cadillac’s iconic pink hue. While the family resemblance to the Celestiq is uncanny, the Sollei is distinctive enough not to look like a roofless Celestiq. Speaking of the roof, the Sollei has a fabric roof made from Daybreak.

Inside, the Sollei is just as elegant and sophisticated. There’s no boring metal trim or carbon fiber here. Cadillac has taken an old-school approach with plenty of Nappa leather and wood trim. The hide is magnificent, with sunburst-themed lighting, perforation, quilting, and embroidery. The leather itself is a subtle pink iridescent pigment that creates a color-changing effect when the sun hits it. This pink tinge has also been applied to the beverage chiller door and glass tray. The built-in chiller has a power glass door and crystal glasses, ideal for rear-seat passengers feeling like a glass of champagne during a sunset drive.

“Sollei reimagines the discovery of travel, envisioning a personalized driving experience that connects one with the natural world around them. The concept celebrates Cadillac’s pedigree of elegant convertibles in a modern form by cultivating high luxury through design expressions and experiences.”

– Erin Crossley, Cadillac Design Director

Gorgeous Interior Is Lined With Nappa Leather And Wood

The unstained wood veneers complement the leatherwork. Cadillac says each piece of wood trim has been hand-cut and applied using marquetry techniques. The windshield has been framed in tasteful, milled, brushed aluminum trim. In addition to these traditional materials, Cadillac has also used a premium bio-based material for the door map pockets and charging pads. Some unusual touches highlight Cadillac’s personalization abilities. This includes customizable 126-color ambient lighting and a bird-watching kit, which consists of a leather tool roll and a leather-covered journal customized to match the vehicle, among other things.

GM’s flashiest SUV has been improved in several ways, with EV-inspired styling, advanced tech, and even more luxury.

Whether Cadillac will put the Sollei into production remains to be seen, but we certainly hope it comes to fruition. Over the years, the automaker has revealed many eye-catching concepts in the past, some of which were hidden from public view until recently. Hopefully, the Sollei is a preview of what’s to come and not just another impressive concept that Cadillac will put away for good – we’d love to see this grace the lawns of Pebble Beach alongside a Rolls-Royce Droptail.
