Key Takeaways
- BMW unveils M Performance Parts upgrades for M5.
- MPP additions include unique carbon fiber front splitter, side skirts, diffuser, and exhaust tips.
- Other upgrades include floor mats, tire bags, and a leather key case.
After unveiling a one-off Frozen Orange M5 yesterday, BMW has now revealed M Performance upgrades for the 717-horsepower PHEV. M Performance accessories for the regular 5 Series and i5 have already been unveiled, and they’re pretty impressive, but for the M5, BMW has turned things up to 11, with loads of carbon fiber all over the super sedan.
BMW says these upgrades enhance aerodynamic performance, although no claims about increased downforce or reduced drag have been made. The M Performance Parts also extend beyond the body, with tire bags, floor mats, and a fine-grain Nappa leather key case also available.
Carbon Fiber Additions Lean Into Edgy Design
As has been the case with BMW designs for a while, the G90 M5’s appearance does not appeal to everyone. If you’re among those who dislike the angular styling, the MPP additions likely won’t change your mind about the car, but there’s no doubt that the look is distinctive. At the front, a carbon fiber splitter with two sections highlights the dual-intake design of the lower bumper aperture, and a fin on either end helps make the side intakes look larger. Moving down the side of the car, M Performance tire valve caps and Frozen Black decals add a touch more character. On the roof, the aramid aerial cover is designed to match the carbon fiber roof characteristic of the M Carbon package.

That package also provides carbon fiber mirror caps. A chunky set of carbon fiber side skirts are also available, with a large fin at each rear wheel arch, and further back, buyers have a choice of two trunk spoiler designs – one with a flat plane and another with a notched center. There’s also a large new two-section diffuser made of carbon fiber, which wraps around the rear bumper to pick up where the side skirt extensions left off. Finally, the M Performance exhaust tips are fashioned from titanium and carbon fiber and feature an embossed M5 logo.
Other Upgrades
The M5 can also get smaller enhancements, like a carbon fiber gas tank cap with brushed aluminum badging and four M Performance floor mats with contrast stitching and tricolor accents. However, we suspect more parts will soon be available, as previous MPP catalogs have included things like Alcantara steering wheel and armrest upgrades, aluminum foot pedals, grille surround trims, and wheels.

Frank van Meel says that a PHEV as heavy as this was the only option until it can perfect high-performance EV technology.
BMW says M Performance rims will arrive in time, presumably in a staggered setup with 20-inch wheels up front and 21-inch wheels at the rear. There’s no doubt that these aesthetic additions give the car more presence, but if it were our cash, we’d simply upgrade the M5 with one of its many Individual color options and call it a day. After all, the M5 is already heavy enough without more bits tacked onto it.
The BMW M Performance Parts available for the new BMW M5 have been developed on the back of BMW M GmbH’s established motor-racing expertise and the experience it has garnered over more than five decades – and are designed precisely to fit the particular characteristics of the high-performance sports car. Plus, the retrofit products have been tested according to the BMW Group’s stringent quality guidelines and have already undergone homologation alongside the overall vehicle, which means separate registration with the vehicle licensing authorities is not required.
