We Have Bad News About GM EVs You’ve Been Waiting For

Key Takeaways

  • GM CEO has confirmed that Buick’s first EV won’t come to America this year.
  • The Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV production at the Orion plant has been delayed.
  • GM’s Factory Zero in Detroit is expected to meet the demand for electric trucks despite timeline changes.

Following GM’s decision to slow down on its ambitious EV goals, the automotive giant has confirmed that it has altered the production timeline of its electric vehicles (EVs). The affected vehicles are Buick’s first EV, plus the pair of electric full-size pickups, the Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV. GM CEO Mary Barra shared the news in an earnings call with analysts this week, Automotive News reports.

“Over the next few years, third-party forecasters now see the EV market growing steadily, but more slowly than it did over the last few years. As a result, we are adjusting our spending plans to make sure we’re capital-efficient and moving in lockstep with customers,” Barra said.

Buick’s First EV Not Coming This Year

According to the report, Barra has confirmed that Buick’s first EV will not reach America this year. The company’s original plan was to reveal and launch its first North American-based EV in 2024, with previous reports pointing to the Electra E5 as Buick’s first battery electric model. This electric SUV has been available on the Chinese market since last year.

Buick has shown various Electra concepts that carry the brand’s new PURE design language, an evolution of the beautiful Wildcat concept. The Automotive Hall of Fame inductee didn’t provide any new timeline for the Buick EV’s arrival nor any confirmation of which model it would be, but said that GM is “committed to growing responsibly and profitably in any demand environment.”

Electric Truck Production At Orion Delayed

According to the report, the production of the Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV has been delayed until mid-2026 at the Orion Assembly plant in Michigan. Of note, this will be the second time GM has adjusted this timeline, which was pushed back to late 2025 after receiving a significant amount of investment for retooling.

It’s important to note that GM’s Factory Zero in Detroit currently produces the Silverado EV (and soon the Sierra EV) side-by-side with the GMC Hummer EV twins. Barra said she’s confident that the dedicated EV facility can meet the demand for GM’s electric trucks. However, the timeline alteration can easily be connected to GM’s decision to rethink its EV strategy.
