Ford Mustang’s Most Iconic Color-Shifting Paint Is Back Thanks To RTR

Key Takeaways

  • Ford’s iconic Mystichrome paint color returns to the Mustang thanks to RTR.
  • Mustang tuner offering exclusive hues for the Mustang, but for a big price.
  • Mystichrome is priced at $15,995, but other hues are available for $8,995.
  • RTR also has an exclusive paint-to-sample service for customers who want a bespoke hue.

Renowned Mustang tuner RTR Vehicles has introduced an iconic color to its Extended Color Palette, allowing modern Mustang drivers to sport a beloved hue from the ‘Stang’s past. It’s called Mystichrome, and first made an appearance on the 1996 Mustang Cobra as ‘Mystic.’ It came back eight years later (reformulated as Mystichrome) on the 2004 Cobra. It’s an extremely rare shade, having appeared on over 1,000 vehicles so far.

Now, RTR customers can specify the striking hue on the new Mustang – for a price, of course. The prismatic and color-shifting paint displays myriad colors, such as purple, gold, green, blue, and root beer, depending on how the light hits the paint. It’s a stunning color and highlights the Mustang’s strong and muscular lines, which can be hidden by darker hues. The way the colors play with each other accentuates the new styling.

Exclusivity Comes At A Price

This unique color forms part of the Premium Paint Option (along with Urban Bamboozle). It doesn’t come cheap, with a hefty price tag of $15,995. While that’s enough to make your wallet wince, there’s no denying the color looks incredible, and will certainly help your Mustang stand out from the crowd. Of course, there are cheaper alternatives, with the “Standard” color options priced from $8,995.

There’s also a paint-to-sample option (similar to Porsche’s unique paint service), which is an “additional $5,000 based on the paint code falling under Standard or Premium Paint,” meaning customers can spend as much as $20,995 on their custom Mustang color – about the same as a brand new Corolla Sedan.

“We are so pumped to introduce the RTR Extended Color Palette and Paint-to-Sample Program! This is more than just a paint job – it’s about giving RTR owners a chance to express their individuality and passion in a way that’s never been possible before on a Mustang. Our team has worked very hard to offer some unique colorways to choose from, and I love all the colors we’ve curated and made available. Bringing back the legendary Mystichrome paint, last seen on the 2004 SVT Cobra, is my absolute favorite offering. It’s been too long, and someone had to do it!”

– RTR founder Vaughn Gittin Jr.

Plenty Of Colors To Choose From

Paint-to-sample colors can only be specified through RTR or an authorized RTR dealer. Once customers submit their chosen color, RTR then sends a custom-painted speed shape for the customer to approve before the Mustang RTR gets its new coat of paint. Vehicles destined for the paint-to-sample option are based on a black Mustang chassis. The car is disassembled and painted; this includes the fenders, door jambs, and trunk jambs to ensure the vehicle is color-matched before being assembled and delivered to the customer.
