- Confirmation of details awaits the debut at Monterey Car Week on August 16.
Several Stellantis brands are in trouble at the moment, but Maserati is not one of them, and it’s showing that by teasing a new supercar to be presented at the Monterey Car Week extravaganza in California this month. Only one teaser image has been provided, and it appears to show a Maserati MC20. We know Maserati is working on an electric MC20 Folgore for introduction next year, but this is something altogether different, as evidenced by the vented front wheel arch that calls to mind the inimitable Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Is Maserati working on a track-focused version of the mid-engine supercar? We’ll only know for sure when it debuts at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering on Friday, August 16, but the signs suggest that’s exactly what we’ll be presented with.

True Motorsport Inspiration
The Italian automaker says that the new arrival will be “a further evolution of the MC20,” but with “the racing spirit of the Maserati GT2.” This track competitor is fitted with the same Nettuno V6 engine as the MC20 but gets bigger turbochargers. Due to Balance of Performance regulations, it doesn’t make any more than the 621 hp offered by the stock car, but Maserati is certainly capable of delivering more.

The Car With The Trident Logo: The Rich History Behind Maserati’s Emblem
The trident is magnificent, no?
Almost exactly a year before the new Maserati’s unveiling, a track-only MC20 called the MCXtrema was revealed with 730 hp, a six-speed sequential racing transmission, and a 551-lb weight reduction diet, among other track-biased upgrades. This 62-unit track toy wore unique bodywork, and Maserati hints at something similar for its latest creation, calling it a “one-of-a-kind car with an unmistakable aesthetic, […] with details typical of a racing car without sacrificing the comfort and hallmarks of road models.”
We’re Convinced – Maserati Is Blending Luxury With Performance
There’s no better place to unveil a special version of a supercar than the best car show in the world, and Maserati says this one will be desired by customers who fall for the most extreme super sports cars, promising it will “make them feel like a true racer, even off the track.” The marque also confirmed that the reveal will take place alongside the MCXtrema (the first example of which will be delivered at the Laguna Seca circuit during the event) and the 20-unit MC20 Icona, which shows off the capabilities of Maserati’s Fuoriserie Personalization Program. With the extremes of circuit-biased and luxury-focused MC20 variants both on display, we’re pretty convinced that Maserati’s new arrival slots somewhere between the two as a road-legal MC20 GT2. We’ll confirm all this and more when we see the reveal in person in two weeks.
