Lamborghini’s V8 Supercar Won’t Be Overshadowed By Its V10 Predecessors

Key Takeaways

  • Lamborghini teases Temerario supercar again, referencing high-rpm engines that came before.
  • Engine will be a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 offering around 900 horsepower with electrification.
  • Reveal takes place August 16 at Monterey Car Week.

The reveal of the all-new successor to the Lamborghini Huracán is just under a fortnight away, with Monterey Car Week set to play host to the glamorous event. While this new supercar will mark steps forward in several areas, it will also pay tribute to the past, something that Lamborghini has highlighted in a new teaser video. The clip features the very first baby Lambo, the Gallardo, revving its even-firing 5.0-liter V10 engine, before transitioning to the Huracán Tecnica revving its 5.2-liter odd-firing V10. Finally, the clip concludes with the new supercar’s engine idling. All of this seems to suggest that despite the addition of forced induction, Sant’Agata’s latest supercar will provide just as visceral an exhaust note as its predecessors.

Lamborghini

Automobili Lamborghini was created in 1963 after its founder had a disagreement with Enzo Ferrari over the cost of servicing his cars, arguing that Ferrari was overcharging for off-the-shelf parts. Enzo didn’t respond amicably, so Ferruccio took matters into his own hands with the 350 GT. Lamborghini later introduced the Miura, widely regarded as the first true supercar and one of the prettiest ever made. These days, the brand’s identity is characterized by AWD drivetrains, outrageous special editions, and raucous engines. The 1,001-hp Revuelto is its current V12 flagship, while the Urus SUV is its bestseller.

Inspired By The Past, Not Shaped By It

Recent spy shots have revealed that the new supercar, predicted to be named Temerario, will include some nods to the past in its styling, with the modern Countach being referenced in the shape of the taillights and the facelifted Gallardo LP-560 letting its inspiration be felt in the few images we’ve seen of the gauge cluster, which shows that the engine revs beyond 10,000 rpm.

That engine is a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 unrelated to those found in other Volkswagen Group products. Refined in the crucible of motorsport (the engine first appeared in the SC63 Le Mans hypercar), the highly-strung engine will produce in the region of 900 horsepower thanks to the assistance of electrification, and since Lamborghini keeps referencing the engines of the Temerario’s forebears, we suspect that the experience will be rich with engagement and emotion. Can Lamborghini make a turbocharged engine sound as good as an atmospheric 10-cylinder? We’ll have to wait to find out, but the marque seems confident.

A New Era

With the Temerario’s arrival, every one of Lamborghini’s three-car model lineup will be electrified. It started with the Revuelto, which develops 1,001 horsepower with the combination of a 6.5-liter V12 and three electric motors, and then came the Urus SE, which effectively replaced the Urus Performante by generating a stunning 800 hp. As part of this new chapter in the company’s history, a redesigned brand identity has been created, but just because the company is focused on hybrids doesn’t mean it won’t continue to excite.

The system can record drive sessions and telemetry and show images and data to a physical or digital coach on the other side of the world in real-time.

In fact, electrification may open up a whole new world of handling improvements, thanks to ideas like the active camber and toe control system that Lamborghini has been testing. Whatever the final product offers, Lamborghini is making sure that we’re all well aware that the new baby Lambo may be different, but that won’t necessarily mean worse.
