Key Takeaways

  • Elegend will present the EL1 electric restomod at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering.
  • The EL1 is priced at roughly $970,000 and is limited to 30 units.
  • Plans for at least two more electric restomods are in motion.

As this weekend’s Monterey Car Week festivities draw ever closer, more and more high-end automotive outfits are announcing their plans for the event, the latest of which is electric resto-modification company Elegend. The company has previously built an electric concept for French automaker Peugeot, but it’s better known for the more recent EL1 it revealed in January 2021, which is said to be powered by the same 800-volt technology employed by the Porsche Taycan.

The EL1 is yet to enter production, but the company says this will begin sometime in 2024. Before then, the company wants America’s well-heeled automotive enthusiasts to see the car in the metal; Elegend says that roughly half of the interest in the EL1 has come from the United States, but it did not say how much of the planned 30-unit production run has been spoken for.

It’s Achingly Expensive

With the wealthy gravitating further away from EVs in recent times, it’s no wonder that a company specializing in electrified restomods is still looking for buyers, but the powertrain is not the only contentious issue – the price is a shocking €890,000, or just over $970,000 at today’s exchange rate. For an Eagle E-Type or a Prodrive P25, buyers are far more willing to spend six figures because they’ll get a mechanical experience they can’t find anywhere else, but that’s not to say that the EL1 is unlikely to excite.

When Is An EV Powertrain Conversion Acceptable?

Is a combustion engine always better, or are there times when the powertrain doesn’t matter?

A single 150 kW motor on the front axle and a 450 kW motor on the rear axle provide AWD and a total of 804 horsepower, with juice supplied by an 80 kWh battery. This battery, when fully charged, can sustain two full race-pace laps of the Nürburgring Nordschleife without any loss of power. Elegend is targeting a 0-62 mph time of 2.8 seconds, a 0-124 mph time of 7.5 seconds, and a top speed of 186 mph.

More To Come

After its American presentation at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, Elegend has plans to produce two more electric restomods in the same mold, each of which will also be limited to 30 units apiece; hopefully, more information will be provided during Monterey Car Week. Also making appearances on the shores of Pebble Beach will be restomods from Singer, new models from AMG and Maybach, and the all-new Lamborghini Temerario, among several other exciting sports cars, supercars, hypercars, and classics. If you’re in the Monterey area this week, the best car show on the planet kicks off on Friday, August 16.
