Volvo Will Introduce Or Update 10 Vehicles In Next Two Years

The next twenty-four months are going to be extremely busy for Volvo as the company CEO, Jim Rowan, and Chief Commercial Officer, Bjorn Annwall, spoke with dealers earlier this week about some very auspicious plans for the company. As expected, electrification was the main topic of discussion, with the pair announcing that a slew of new and updated vehicles are slated for production over the next two years. 10, in fact, though some of them you’re already aware of, and others will probably not reach U.S. shores.

This comes on the heels of a change of heart from the automaker, who initially had plans for a fully electric vehicle line by 2030, and later modified that blueprint to suggest that 90-100% of its global sales will be electrified offerings based on EVs and plug-in hybrids, with a few hybrid models intended to fill any gaps in the market.

Some New, Some Familiar

You’re likely already well aware of one of the vehicles on the list if you’ve heard and read about the EX90, Volvo’s first three-row, mid-size SUV EV that will offer over 300 miles of range. Already in production and available for pre-order, it’s expected later this year. Sized below the EX90 is the EX60, based on the SPA3 platform. It’s expected to replace the Volvo XC60, which has served the last six years in the line-up and is available as a plug-in hybrid and turbo inline-four.

The XC40 Recharge feels like it’s in need of change and will eventually be replaced by the upcoming battery-electric EX40. The smaller EX30, which was pushed back to 2025 for U.S. delivery, but is available in Europe and seemingly plagued by issues currently, also makes the list of new vehicles.

The EC40 will relieve the XC40 and C40 Recharge of their duties as well. An updated XC90 will be avilalble for the 2025 model year and is a PHEV, rather than full electric model like much of the rest of the list.

Potential Wagon

Could a new Volvo wagon make an appearance as well? According to the info relayed at the dealer meeting, the EV60 Cross Country is in the works, though there is no word on whether it will be available globally. The ES90 that CarBuzz reported on last year is also a newcomer, has already been teased, and will carry the title of the brand’s very first EV sedan.

The electric motors that will be used to motivate these new EV products will also be tasked with assisting a group of Volvo’s upcoming PHEV vehicles that will rest on the SPA1 platform and help make up the rest of the 10 new or refreshed models covered in the meeting. And, to that end, Volvo also talked about the development of higher efficiency motors with a goal of 93% efficiency set for the company, which is a few points higher than their current model’s 91%.

Maintaining The Momentum

Volvo may have pulled back from their initial plans of being completely electric by 2030, but that doesn’t mean they’ve coming to a complete stop. In fact, if anything, they’re more focused than ever, have laid out a game plan, and are taking the steps to get there in rather short order. Two years might sound like a long time, especially when you consider the brand’s recent model delays and issues, but in regard to refreshing or introducing almost a dozen vehicles, it’s not long at all.
