2025 Toyota Corolla Drops Nightshade Trim, Keeps Affordable Pricing

A few months back, the 2025 Toyota Corolla Hatchback arrived with no changes other than a minor price increase, and now the 2025 Corolla Sedan has been detailed by Toyota USA, and although some real changes are made, the pricing increase is just as minor, swelling by $125 on the base trim and $740 on the top trim. As discussed previously, there’s a new Corolla FX Special Edition, which essentially replaces the old Nightshade treatment with a different color scheme. Its name is a nod to the beloved Corolla FX16 that debuted in 1987, but besides a retuned electric power steering system, it’s mechanically identical to every other gas Corolla.

What You Get For Your Money

The FX Edition is based on the mid-range SE trim but adds Moonstone fabric sport seats with orange stitching, an FX-specific rear spoiler on the trunk, lowering springs, and a set of 18-inch wheels painted satin black with machined inserts. The badges, mirror caps, taillamp accents, and roof are all black, and this applies regardless of the color you choose for the body, which is limited to three options: Midnight Black Metallic, Ice Cap (white), and Underground (grey). This two-tone color scheme is available on the SE and XSE, too, so long as it is not combined with dark Blueprint paint.

The FX also debuts a new 10.5-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia display that is available on the SE and standard on higher trims (the base LE soldiers on with an 8.0-inch screen). This enables dual Bluetooth phone connections and adds 4G connectivity, which makes voice control possible. As standard, the Corolla has a six-speaker sound system, but the top XSE trim gets the otherwise optional JBL nine-speaker setup.

Otherwise Unchanged

Mechanically, there’s nothing to report, with all Corolla models featuring a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine producing 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. Power continues to reach the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission, and the same will probably be true of the Corolla Hybrid, which is yet to be detailed. For the 2024 model year, this was $1,450 more than the regular LE, $500 more than the gas-only SE and Nightshade, and $100 more than the non-hybrid XSE.

The Corolla Hybrid is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder paired with two electric motors to deliver a combined 128 hp and 105 lb-ft. These figures are unlikely to change much for the new model year, but we’ll let you know if they do. For the record, the 2025 Honda Civic Sedan starts at $25,345, and while that’s more than the Corolla, the Civic is also considerably more powerful with 200 hp/232 lb-ft of torque.
