Ford Addresses EV Naysayers’ Biggest Complaint

Sales of electric vehicles like the Ford Mustang Mach-E are in a slump, with consumers choosing to purchase hybrids or PHEVs instead. To sweeten the deal for buyers on the fence, the Blue Oval has announced that it will give customers a complimentary home charger when they buy or lease an E-Transit, F-150 Lightning, and Mustang Mach-E.

This is a great incentive for customers, many of whom list charging as the biggest hindrance to EV ownership. Clients can opt to take the charger with them or have it delivered, and Ford will have a professional install it at your residence “at no charge for a standard install.”

A Great Incentive For Potential Ford EV Buyers

For would-be Ford EV owners, this is a huge benefit and will help customers save money and time with a more efficient form of charging. According to research conducted by Ford, approximately 90% of car buyers have said they would be more open to purchasing an electric car “if they knew they could charge at home.” With this new initiative, the American automaker could be reeling in more customers who would have previously purchased a hybrid – or an EV from a rival brand.

Speaking to Axios, CEO Jim Farley said that if this program is successful, it could be extended. “If this works, we’ll no doubt extend it, but we have to prove ourselves it works,” said the chief executive. And what about customers who already have a home charging unit? They get a $2,000 cash back, sweetening the deal for EV buyers of all kinds.

Charging Remains A Hindrance To EV Ownership

Farley described charging anxiety as one of the biggest issues regarding EV ownership. This new initiative is part of Ford’s attempt to rectify this and boost sales. “We found out a long time ago that just lowering the price of EVs is not going to solve the problem of adoption,” said the CEO.

Let’s not forget that the Blue Oval is also working hard to expand the available public charger network. For a start, the Dearborn-based marque has increased the available public charger locations, by providing Ford EV owners access to the expansive Tesla Supercharger network. It’s worth noting that Ford is working on an affordable electric car that is due in 2027; the arrival of this competitive EV is expected to help Ford boost its battery-electric sales, and provide customers with something they truly need: an affordable electric vehicle.
