Your Old-School British Sports Car Dreams Are Coming True Thanks To Morgan

If you’ve been lusting after a classic British sports car from 1950 but don’t want to deal with the hassle of applying for a Show or Display permit, we have good news. Thanks to the Replica Car Bill, which allows low-volume auto manufacturers to sell up to 325 replicas of cars 25 years or older per year, the recently updated Morgan Plus Four is coming to America, reports Hagerty. The basic design of the sports car was first seen on the market in 1950, but these days, you get a modern power plant like the one you’d find in a BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, except it comes in a package that weighs roughly 2,200 lbs dry, or considerably less than even a Mazda MX-5 Miata.

Morgan Motor Company

Morgan Motor Company Limited was founded in 1910 by Henry Frederick Stanley Morgan and currently produces around 850 cars per year, all of which are assembled by hand. An unusual trait of the small British company is that it uses wood for creating the body shell, but even so, some of its cars are stranger than others, like the quirky but lovable Morgan Three-Wheeler.

Turbo Power

Under the hood is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine developing 255 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, enabling a 0-60 mph time of 4.8 seconds (0-62 mph takes 5.2 seconds). Top speed is rated at 149 mph, while the WLTP-rated fuel economy figure is 39 mpg. The BMW TwinPower engine drives the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission, but it’s unclear which of these will be offered to Americans, or if both options will be available.

Given the enthusiast bias of a car like this and the sort of experience that someone who buys it would be looking for, we’d be surprised if the stick shift isn’t offered. CarBuzz has reached out to Morgan for more information and will update this article with any response we receive.

Pricing Could Be Relatively Reasonable Or Ridiculous

Sennheiser provides the audio system, AP Racing the brakes. The Plus Four also includes electronic stability control, and while its double-wishbone suspension is already fantastic, it can be optionally upgraded to feature dampening adjustment as part of the Dynamic Handling Pack, which also adds a rear anti-roll bar. An adaptive exhaust system allows the driver to choose from a raucous popping and banging soundtrack or a more mellow and socially acceptable note. LED lighting, aluminum wing mirrors, and a variety of optional fabrics and materials help set this old-school sports car apart but be warned, a unique experience like this is not cheap.

According to Hagerty, the Mogan Plus Four will reach the US with a base MSRP “in the region of $74,500.” We hope that’s accurate because the UK price including taxes is £69,995, which translates to a little less than $94,000 at current exchange rates. The company also produces a Plus Six with, you guessed it, a BMW-sourced straight-six, but the British marque will surely wait to see how popular the four-banger is before building a lefthand-drive version of the more expensive roadster.
