Ford’s Electric Pickup Truck Is Decimating The Competition

Ford’s all-electric F-150 Lightning pickup truck has turned things around, with the sales numbers doubling in the third quarter of 2024. In fact, year-to-date sales of the battery-electric truck are also on the up and up, suggesting that demand for the competent electric F-150 is on the rise.

According to the Blue Oval’s latest sales figures, Ford shifted 7,162 units in Q3 2024. That is an increase of 104.5% compared to the same period last year when Ford managed to sell just 3,503 examples. Compared to arch-rival Chevrolet, the Dearborn-based brand is in the lead when it comes to electric trucks. In the same period, a mere 1,995 units of the Silverado EV were delivered to customers.

Ford F-150 Lightning Outsold Rivals From General Motors

In all fairness, the F-150 Lightning has been on sale a lot longer than the Silverado EV. When production of the electric Chevy truck finally picks up, perhaps the advantage will be reduced somewhat. The GMC Sierra EV was even less popular than its corporate cousin, with just 387 recorded sales. GMC combines numbers for the Hummer EV Pickup and SUV models, but even so, it can’t match the F-150 Lightning, with 4,305 units leaving showroom floors.

That’s still impressive, considering the Hummer EV has a starting price of $96,550 – about the same as a top-spec F-150 Lightning. It’s unclear what the driving force behind the Lightning’s strong sales is, but it’s worth noting that the automaker has introduced the new Flash trim that arrived for MY2024, providing customers with a fine blend of value, performance, and equipment. If this newfound success continues, Ford may have to increase production at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center after cutting shifts dramatically earlier this year.

Electric Vehicle Sales Are Booming At Ford

Earlier this year, the Flash (and several other trims) received a $5,500 price cut, making the $67,995 truck excellent value in its segment. CarBuzz has reached out to Ford for additional information and will update the article once we receive a reply. It will be interesting to see how the F-150 Lightning fares against the Tesla Cybertruck and Rivian R1T, but neither automaker has released their sales figures. However, it’s worth noting that the F-150 Lightning outsold its aforementioned rivals in March.

While the Lightning’s sales are impressive, it’s still one of the poorest sellers in the Blue Oval’s lineup – only the E-Transit (2,955) and Transit Connect (1,354) sold in fewer numbers. Electric vehicles have been a great success for the automaker, which claims it is second only to Tesla in the US electric car market. Overall, Ford EV sales have increased by 45% this year, with the company delivering 67,689 electric vehicles through September. Unsurprisingly, the Mustang Mach-E is the marque’s best-selling battery-electric car, with Q3 sales totaling 13,392 examples. Interestingly, this is slightly less than Q3 2023, when Ford sold 14,842 units.
