Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Gets The Security Fix It Needed

We have news about the Toyota Land Cruiser, the big 300 version. Before you ask, no, it’s still not coming to America. You’ll still have to get the Lexus LX if you want the 300, or go with the 250 version offered by Toyota. This is still interesting, though, because it covers some updates that are a big deal given the context. In Japan, the company is upgrading the Land Cruiser’s security features, because the big SUVs are stolen all the time there. According to Carscoops, the Land Cruiser has been the most-stolen vehicle in Japan, and last year, more than a quarter of all vehicles stolen were Land Cruisers.

Biometrics And More To Lock Down The Land Cruiser

Toyota is introducing a variety of tweaks to better secure the Land Cruiser, and the most interesting of them is the fingerprint scanner. It will simply let the owner require a fingerprint scan to start up the vehicle, in addition to detecting the key. It won’t even be a high-end feature, as it will be included on every Land Cruiser 300 model. Toyota has also upgraded the wireless key sensors for locking and starting. The keys will have to be in a more precise location for the vehicle to unlock and start. Finally, Toyota is also offering a lockout on the My Toyota+ app. This will allow the owner to set the vehicle to stay locked and inoperable until told otherwise through the app.

You won’t need a key, fob, or smartphone to open the GV60.

Even though the Land Cruiser 300 won’t be available in the US, some features similar to these are already available. Genesis offers a particularly fancy facial recognition system for the GV60 EV. Once you’ve scanned your face and authorized it for accessing the car, you can unlock and enter your GV60 without having your key or even your phone. It does this via an infrared scanner on the B-pillar.

Ford’s Looking Out For Your Truck And Your Wallet With Security Package

It won’t just be Ford pickups in the future, either.

As for app locking, Ford has added that as a part of its Ford Security Package for the F-150 pickup. It works basically the same as the Toyota system, allowing the owner to lock down the vehicle to any keys until the owner decides. Ford highlights it as a way to keep the vehicle more secure when out of town, so that if someone steals a key from the house, they can’t take the car.

Other Land Cruiser Updates

Toyota made a few other small changes to the Land Cruiser in Japan. For reguatory reasons, it made updates to the automatic emergency braking system and some emissions controls for diesel models. The instrument screens have been upgraded to full-color TFT displays. The base one is 7 inches in size, and the optional one is 12.3. Similarly, the base infotainment screen is now an 8-inch unit, with a 12.3-inch one available as an option. At the moment, though, Toyota isn’t taking additional orders for the Land Cruiser. According to Carscoops, this is due to a need to fill existing orders first.
