It’s a big week for inflated car pricing, and we don’t just mean the new U.S. trade tariffs that have been implemented by the White House. No, another big money deal went down this week in the online auction space, where somebody just paid six figures for an old GMC from North Carolina.
Okay, it’s a Typhoon, but they usually go for a third of what this one did, which sold for more than even the most luxurious and well-equipped Hummer or Sierra. In fact, it’s selling price rivals some supercars.

An SUV Tuned For Performance
Anyone who knows about the Jimmy Typhoon from the 1990s should already love it. This Typhoon is well-equipped with a 4.3-liter turbo V6 good for 280 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque on paper but tuned for performance, and it was borrowed from the earlier sporty Syclone pickup truck also from GMC.
The SUV is also set up with a limited-slip differential and all-wheel drive, with a four-speed auto controlling the gearing. It also featured upgraded brakes, self-leveling rear suspension, and specialized transmission cooling.

1992 GMC Typhoon Blessed With 1,500-HP LS V8
That’s probably enough power for a ’90s SUV.
This example, which sold this week on the Bring A Trailer auction site for an eye-watering sum, is a very special specification of the Typhoon, as it’s said to be just one of 77 examples produced for the 1993 model year with the red on red body paint and a charcoal interior. It moved across the block for $226,000 this week, which is a suspicious amount of money. The Hagerty estimation page for Typhoon auctions shows previous sales hovering between $30,000 to $80,000, but nothing close to this latest price.
This One Has Barely More Than Delivery Miles
The Typhoon comes with a factory aero kit, integrated fog lights, split rear tailgate with a rear wiper, and custom graphics. This one rides on 16-inch turbine-style wheels, and the interior comes with cruise control, air conditioning, and powered windows.
Somehow, this example from a North Carolina dealer has just 688 miles on the clock.

SVE Might Revive GMC Typhoon Because Everyone Loves Powerful SUVs
This is what GMC needs to be fun again.
With fewer than 5,000 total Typhoon SUVs ever built, and even fewer in this Apple Red body style, this one truly is a darling. Just, maybe not enough of a darling to replace something like a brand-new Porsche or Lamborghini in the garage. Still, everyone has their preferences, and this is indeed one cool SUV, as it’s widely considered the first of its sporty kind and one of the best of the niche.
There’s just one problem with sales like these: vehicles that, as mentioned, might have once sold for nearly 10 times less may now increase in value and be marked up by their sellers, making an attainable performance SUV not so attainable anymore.
