The controversial BMW XM was always going to be a gamble, and the sales figures reflect that it’s a gamble BMW may have lost. The overtly styled and somewhat unfocused performance SUV is being outsold globally by every other product in BMW’s lineup, losing out to even the niche Z4 Roadster, which might explain why XM discounts have now reached as much as $22,500, as reported by CarsDirect.

According to a dealer incentive bulletin seen by the publication, BMW now offers $5,000 in either loyalty or conquest cash on a 2024 XM. That’s the largest rebate BMW offers across the entire model range, and it can still be stacked with existing offers to reach that five-figure discount.
Several Stackable Discounts, But You Can’t Get The Deals On The Latest Versions
These include another $15,000 off when financing or paying cash, or as much as $17,500 off if you choose to. Thus, if you combine all these offers and choose to lease, you get $22,500 off and if you want to buy, you get a nice round 20 grand off. The catch is that this deal only applies to 2024 models, and CarsDirect reports that 2024 inventory is “almost nonexistent.”

What Manufacturers Can Learn From High-Profile Automotive Flops
Sometimes giving people what they want is a poor business decision.
This means you’ll be limited in spec and color choices. Alternatively, you can order a 2025 model, but this only gets a $12,500 credit (for both purchases and leases), making a relatively small dent in the $160,500 base MSRP of the regular XM and the $186,700 asking price of the XM Label (both prices excluding $1,175 for destination).
The XM Likely Won’t Live Forever, But It’ll Be Around A While Yet
The XM has repeatedly achieved poor sales results, despite attempts to place it in the same light as performance SUVs like the Urus with upmarket special editions and daring one-offs supported by celebrities. According to reports that BMW refused to confirm or deny, the XM will be killed off by 2028. After that, BMW may well try something brand new, or avoid overly obnoxious SUVs for a little while. But it hasn’t been a total waste.

They’re a dying breed, but BMW isn’t holding the line.
While this particular model may have been a flop, its advanced powertrain is shared with the G90 BMW M5, a car that hides its weight much better, and we have no doubt that Munich will have learned lessons from this experiment. Hopefully, BMW will focus more on elegance and a luxury experience, like the upcoming Skytop, and any future attempts at stealing sales from the likes of the DBX707, Urus, and Bentayga will be more successful. But until then, we expect discounts on the XM to be a regular feature.
