Lucid Ponies Up After Its Floor Mat Faux Pas

Floor mats that were on sale up until February of this year may come loose and get in the way of the Lucid Air electric sedan’s accelerator pedal, according to a newly reported recall. The good news is owners should get their money back, and the recall fix is incredibly simple.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has yet to publicly issue the recall notice on its website or press releases, but Automotive News is now reporting the issue. Lucid’s latest recall reportedly impacts 4,294 vehicles that have been sold with troubling floor mats. Fortunately, this does not impact all vehicles due to a subtle design difference.

A Lucid Employee, Not A Customer, Noticed The Problem

The issue was first noticed by a Lucid employee back in August 2024, who flagged it after experiencing a mat interfering with the accelerator on a company test drive. As such, there was no panicking and the problem was promptly noted.

Fortunately, Lucid says there are no known crashes or injuries so far related to this recall. The simple solution to the recall notice is to basically remove the mats from the car, and Lucid is refunding owners with the impacted mats so they feel better about it.

The Most Common Reasons For Automotive Recalls

What are the most common reasons for recalling cars? We’ve decided to find out.

Apparently, the issue comes down to some Lucid Air model floor mats being mounted differently; mats secured by nibs may come loose, whereas mats secured with anchors may not be affected. It seems like an obvious thing, but sometimes, issues like this never present themselves besides under very specific and random conditions.

“The safety of our customers and their families is the highest priority,” a Lucid spokesperson said in an email to Automotive News. “Lucid has begun contacting the owners of vehicles for which these mats were originally designed to notify them of the recalls and to provide further information.”

Lucid Isn’t The First With Floor Mat Problems

Lucid notified dealers of the recall this month, and will send out notices to Lucid owners affected by the end of May, so the issue should be officially resolved soon. In the meantime, Air owners can self-inspect to see which mat type they have.

Lucid isn’t the first automaker to have issues with floor mats. Often labeled as “unintended acceleration,” the floor mat issue has hit Toyota majorly in the past, but also Maserati and even more recently, Jeep to a smaller degree.

The Biggest Recalls Of 2024

These were the big winners (or losers) of 2024.

While the issue could have dire consequences, it’s a relatively small problem that gets blown out of proportion when it comes time to tally up the total number of recalls that affect each automaker. Still, any brand would rather have a recall than be responsible for an injury or worse, and recalls like this teach companies lessons for future products.
