Hyundai announced a couple of months ago that it would start providing free adapters to owners of their electric cars. It’s not just Hyundai, though, as Genesis is doing the same. And finally, owners of EVs from both brands will be able to order their free adapters. With them, they’ll be able to add at least 20,000 Tesla V3 Supercharger locations to their lists of possible charging destinations.
Genesis
Genesis was initially launched as a Hyundai vehicle model – the Genesis sedan in 2004 – but in 2015, it became a standalone luxury brand in the same vein as Toyota’s Lexus or Honda’s Acura. Since then, the G90 has become a symbol of Korean luxury in a German-dominated premium market, and with new plans to take on the likes of AMG with a Magma performance sub-brand, Genesis is showing no signs of slowing.

Eligibility For The Adapter
Hyundai and Genesis are likely to give away quite a few charging adapters. As long as someone owns a compatible Hyundai, bought it before January 31 of this year, and has a MyHyundai or MyGenesis account, they can get one. The compatibility is wide-ranging, too. On the Hyundai side, usual suspects such as the current Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6 and Kona Electric are included. But even the original Ioniqs, the ones without numbers, and the previous Kona Electric also get compatibility with the chargers. Genesis, with a shorter history of EVs, just offers compatibility with the GV60 and the Electrified versions of the GV70 and G80.
To get the adapters, Hyundai and Genesis will send qualifying owners with respective owner accounts emails with directions. Basically, owners will just have to agree to the terms of service agreement and confirm their addresses. After that, the companies will ship the adapters. It’s really that simple, and the emails will start going out on the week of April 7. Take note, there is a limited time to accept the free adapters. Owners have 60 days from receiving the email to accept. That’s a fairly sizable window of time, but it’s important to know that the offer isn’t unlimited. Presumably, the adapter will be available for purchase after the offer window closes.
What Other Automakers Are Doing
The program differs significantly from Kia’s. Kia announced previously that it would only be providing free adapters to buyers of EV6s and EV9s purchased after September 4, 2024. Other owners of Kia EVs with DC fast charging capability, such as the first-generation Niro, would have to purchase an adapter for an undisclosed price.
Ford took a similar approach to Genesis and Hyundai. In February of last year, it announced it would be providing adapters for free to owners of Mustang Mach-Es and F-150 Lightnings. The window to reserve one has since closed, but Ford still sells adapters for anyone that may have missed the promotion, or have simply lost or broken an adapter. They go for $200 at Ford’s website.
