Austria takes speeding seriously, and one unfortunate Bugatti driver learned that the hard way

- A Bugatti Chiron has reportedly been confiscated by authorities in Austria.
- The driver of the car appears to have hit speeds of 76 mph in a 31 mph zone.
- What happens next remains unclear, but the car might be sold by authorities.
It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a flying Bugatti Chiron…taking off a little too fast? Well, that’s not something you see every day, but one unlucky driver learned the hard way that there’s a kryptonite to even the fastest hypercars: the Austrian Federal Police.
According to Heute, a 38-year-old Austrian was driving on Vienna’s famous Ringstrasse, a ring road that circles the city’s historic center, when he hit speeds of 76 mph (123 km/h). That appears to be more than twice the speed limit and he soon came across a speed trap located near the Parliament building.

After getting stopped, the driver apparently tried the classic “It’s not mine, officer” excuse, claiming the Bugatti belonged to a friend. That didn’t help him out of his jam as police confiscated the Bugatti and had it hauled away from the scene. As for the driver, he reportedly lost his license.
While seizing a multimillion dollar hypercar sounds a little extreme, the country enacted tough laws last year to fight ‘super speeders.’ They specifically target drivers traveling more than 37 mph (60 km/h) over the speed limit.
It’s not entirely clear what will happen next in this case, but the Austrian government has been keen on selling cars to punish offenders and deter speeding. However, if the driver wasn’t the owner of the car, that could complicate things.

Only time will tell what happens, but the standard Chiron features a quad turbocharged 8.0-liter W16 engine producing 1,479 hp (1,103 kW / 1,500 PS) and 1,180 lb-ft (1,600 Nm) of torque. It enables the coupe to accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 2.4 seconds and 0-248 mph (0-400 km/h) in 32.6 seconds. When it was new, prices started from around $3 million before taxes.
