The Porsche 718 Cayman is going the way of the dodo earlier than expected as the German automaker moves forward with its electrification plan. We expect some form of tribute to the most attainable Porsche sports car, especially from fans, but one owner from Florida has decided to do so in the most unconventional way possible – shoehorning a Porsche 911 GT2 RS engine into a 2016 Cayman 981 GTS.

The ambitious but not impossible engine swap was facilitated by BGB Motorsports Group from the Sunshine State. The build is a combination of a high-spec 2016 Cayman GTS priced at $95,000 and a 3.8-liter 991.2 911 GT2 RS flat-six engine, with under 5,000 miles when installed. The mission? To make what may well be the most powerful Cayman ever created using only OEM Porsche parts.
Only Using Original Porsche OEM Parts
And that they did, well, almost, since the builders had to use non-Porsche parts only to connect or plumb relocated factory components. Beyond that, the setup was pretty flawless, but the biggest challenge was its water-cooling system, as the car was supposed to hot climates like Florida. Through the help of a fabricator named JT Oliver, it was completed, with a system that runs water between the rear-mounted intercoolers and a frunk-mounted tank.

As for output, the GT2 RS-swapped Cayman is currently producing 650 horsepower the last time it visited the dyno. However, these are conservative numbers as they claim that they can pump it to 800 hp. As the owner explained, they are focusing on optimizing traction before increasing power. All of these were achieved with stock ECU, PDK calibration, ABS, and power steering management (PSM), which is quite impressive.
It’s Currently Available For Purchase
On the outside, there are upgrades that complement the insane work done at the back. The Cayman GTS also received some upgrades using Cayman GT4 parts sourced from Porsche dealerships. Damping and braking are also enhanced using parts from the GT4S Club Sport, while the wheels are upgraded to a set of 18-pound Forgeline GA1R lightweight wheels.

The engine-swapped Cayman GT4 is currently undergoing endurance testing through spring and summer, most likely making sure that the water-cooling system works as intended. Most importantly, the car is also available for purchase in case you’re interested, though the exact number wasn’t divulged (we’re sure it won’t be cheap). While the identity of the owner is somehow masked, you can follow the build through its official Instagram account (see embedded posts below).
