The automotive world often looks to the aviation industry for design inspiration. Just look at Saab, with the slogan “Born From Jets” because it literally also built fighter planes. There’s also the obvious modern Lamborghini flourishes to make you feel like you’re in a jet cockpit with flick switches.
Now, bespoke coachbuilder Carlex is taking its previously-introduced retro-inspired Vintage G-Wagen redesign, based on the G-Class, and merging it with elements of the iconic P-51 Mustang fighter jet.
The Carlex Vintage G63
The Carlex Vintage model starts with a G63 making 577 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque from a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, further modified with custom retro-inspired 20-inch wheels, two-tone paintwork, and additional chrome-looking work on the bumpers and more, with some pieces made of carbon fiber.

This is an aftermarket company that rarely disappoints.
Other mods on the normal Vintage include a 3.9-inch suspension lift and a widening of the body by 3.1 inches. Inside, there are swathes of Nappa leather and suede materials, with a wood-paneled rear cargo area, and a re-trimmed headliner in the material and colorway of the buyer’s choice.
WWII Craftsmanship Detailed Inside And Out
The Carlex G-Wagen inspired by these planes also now gets a polished and riveted roof panel on the SUV, riveted door panels, and 10, read that again, 10 side-mounted exhaust tubes, five on each side to mimic the aircraft. It will come in three bespoke flavors, with the first introduced as a deep green and chrome look with white accents called The Emerald Racer.
Inside, it has brown leather seating and steering, matched with green suede contrasting panels. There are also custom AC vents meant to mimic the front propeller of the SW-51/P-51 aircraft.

The other two bespoke SW-51-inspired SUVs will be called The Shadow Comet and The Crimson Phantom and should be announced in more detail soon. The former features Midnight Black paintwork with brushed aluminum accents, and the latter features a bold Red and Steel Gray paint job.
The SW-51 Tribute Plane
This latest retro G-Wagen is in partnership with bespoke airplane builder ScaleWings, which builds a SW-51 airplane that is as close a match to the original P-51 WWII fighter plane as you can fly today, without just flying the real thing.
The replica plane is a carbon-composite body with riveted metal exterior polished panels and features a modern engine and cockpit.
In terms of pricing, if you have to ask… Custom creations like this are expensive, and when paired with another custom creation based on an SUV that already costs in the six-figure range, the asking price must be astronomical.
