Icon 4×4’s Ford Bronco Restomod Embraces Electric Power

  • The overhauled classic off-roader has a 105 kWh battery pack and offers 175-200 miles of range.
  • Electric motors combine to deliver 500 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque through all four wheels.
  • Interested customers will have to fork out at least $449,000 for the limited restomod.

For many years, Icon 4×4 has been building some of the finest restomodded Ford Broncos. It’s also resisted the trend of turning classics like the Bronco into EVs. At least, until now. After more than 5,000 hours of engineering and development, the US firm has launched its EV Bronco program.

Obviously, there will be many classic Bronco enthusiasts who have absolutely no interest in turning their trucks into EVs, but, for some, the ease of use provided by an electric powertrain may be too hard to ignore. Icon’s electric Bronco uses a 400-volt electrical architecture and a large 105 kWh battery pack.

A pair of electric motors funnel power through all four wheels, combining to produce over 500 hp and 440 lb-ft (596 Nm) of torque. Those are some seriously impressive figures, and should make the classic truck feel very rapid. The Bronco EV needs just 4.5 seconds to hit 60 mph (96 km/h). What’s not so impressive is the range. Despite the large 105 kWh pack, Icon quotes a driving range of just 175-200 miles (282-320 km). That’s enough for cruising down the beach, but certainly isn’t enough for longer journeys.

Like all other Icon projects, the work hasn’t stopped with the powertrain. Modern Brembo brakes have been installed, as has Reiger adjustable suspension and Currie axles with a locking front differential. Icon didn’t reveal the exact charging speeds, but says it can charge from 20-80% in less than an hour. It also has an onboard 6.6 kW Level 2 charger for when owners need to juice the battery up at home.

The first Bronco EV built by Icon is known as Blue Star and trimmed in a bright shade of blue. Its cabin has been overhauled with new materials, giving it a fresh look without killing that retro vibe.

Then there’s the price. The first 10 examples of the Bronco EV, known as the Special Limited Edition, have an MSRP of $449,000, making them one of the most expensive classic Broncos in the market.
