Tesla’s Newest Model Already Gets Its First Software Update

The Tesla Model Y, America’s best-selling EV in 2024, just got its major revamp earlier this year. It’s better in more ways than one compared to its predecessors, with the Launch Series packed with standard features for under $60,000. The Texas-based automaker has started deliveries of the new Model Y – codenamed Juniper – to its customers, and now its first software update is rolling out.

Tesla’s over-the-air software update 2025.8.6 has been rolled out, not only for the Model Y but for the entire range as well. As for the automaker’s newest model, it gets an updated beta version of the Auto-Shift feature, which was available as standard with the Model Y Launch Series but only when getting out of Park. In the updated version, the feature now allows three-point turns.

What’s The Auto-Shift Feature?

As you may have guessed, Tesla’s Auto Shift feature assists drivers by automatically shifting between Drive (D) and Reverse (R). The feature behaves based on the surroundings, but drivers should always be ready to take over in case it doesn’t engage, plus warnings will be shown on the screen that need confirmation from the driver. While the feature may sound mundane, it is designed to reduce touchscreen inputs, especially now that the Juniper has its gear selector integrated into the infotainment system.

Other updates for the Model Y Juniper include an adjustment to its Energy Consumption Tracking, which can now view the last 10, 100, or 200 miles. The battery’s energy estimation has also been updated to account for usage patterns and driving history. Tesla has also rolled out a Battery Health Test feature to measure its energy retention over the years. All of these updates also apply to the Model S, Model 3, Model X, and the Cybertruck.

More Updates Via 2025.8.6

The outgoing Tesla Model Y has also gotten some love from the automaker with the introduction of an in-cabin radar feature. Available as standard with the Model Y Juniper, this tech “can detect the presence of people inside the vehicle and use the measurements to determine occupancy,” according to the owner’s manual. It’s only applicable to MY2022 Model Ys and newer since they’re the ones equipped with the necessary hardware. Tesla prefers cameras these days.

Other important enhancements that go with the software update 2025.8.6 include improvements to the Cybertruck’s steer-by-wire system, getting better feedback for a more realistic and responsive driving experience. The electric truck’s ride height can now also be adjusted via the Tesla app. Meanwhile, the revamped Tesla Model 3 now engages Standard Ride & Handling mode when switching to Autopilot.
