Chevrolet Corvette ZR1s And Their Big Carbon Fiber Wings Arriving Sooner Than Expected

It feels like it’s taken as long for the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 to go from reveal to on the road as it took from the first rumors to the actual reveal. But wait no longer – Chevrolet might finally be about to start building its most extreme Corvette ever.

The 1,064-horsepower C8 Corvette ZR1, one of the most anticipated cars of the century, is set to start production in May. That’s according to the Mid-Engine Corvette Forum, where buyers are finally seeing their orders moved to the last stage before the actual building of the cars at the factory in Bowling Green.

Delays Averted, ZR1 Is Almost Ready For Launch

It’s all a bit complicated, at least if you’re hanging on every bit of news about your 233-mph Corvette. In mid-February, a number of customers saw their ZR1 orders move to what is called “Code 2000.” That’s an internal GM event code which means GM has accepted the order for the vehicle.

Last month, customers and dealers started receiving notice that their vehicle had been moved to 3000. That means Order Accepted by Production Control, or, in short, that GM’s factory has said it will be able to make it. Some dealers are now reporting on the site that the vehicles have a “Target Production Week” in early May. That could mean the new supercars get to their first owners slightly before July 25, which would mark a year from the ZR1 reveal taking place.

Need proof the new Corvette ZR1 is a top-tier supercar? It lays down hypercar-beating quarter miles.

Not all has been going smoothly, however. Some forum users were saying that buyers who want the $8,495 Carbon Fiber Aero Package and its ultra-tall rear wing are getting some bad news. The claim is that buyers who wanted that package (called T0M internally) are getting passed over or being asked if they would be okay with a car without it.

In the last couple of days, buyers looking for those models have reported that they, too, are getting the 3000 status, suggesting that GM has overcome whatever problems were affecting the carbon aero package.

Get Ready For The 1,064 Hp Beast To Explode

While we weren’t able to confirm this news through GM, these forums and their extremely dedicated owners are often the first source of news like this. If it’s been circulating for more than a couple of days, it’s likely correct.

How The ZR1 That Started It All Compares To The All-New 233 MPH Model

The original is still an incredible vehicle.

The ZR1, if you’ve somehow forgotten, is the most extreme Corvette ever. Its twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 makes 1,064 horsepower, letting it hit 0-60 in 2.3 seconds and crack into the 9s in the quarter-mile. Chevrolet calls it “the fastest car ever built by an American auto manufacturer,” thanks to its 233 mph top speed.

It’s faster and more powerful than just about anything, really. Certainly anything else under $200,000. Chevrolet is benchmarking it against supercars like the Ferrari SF90 XX and Lamborghini Revuelto, vehicles that are three times the price with less power and lower top speeds.
