Chevy’s New Corvette Concept Has One Fatal Flaw: No V-8

The Chevrolet C8 Corvette is already five years old. While it might be too soon to dream about the C9, it’s difficult not to imagine what comes next when General Motors is trotting out new Corvette concepts. The automaker asked its advanced design studios to develop Corvette designs, and this one hails from GM’s new office in the United Kingdom. It’s one of several Corvette concepts that’ll debut this year.

The car looks like something out of a video game, borrowing heavily from the Corvette’s styling history. There are gullwing doors and a split in the front and rear windows, invoking the iconic “split window” of the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray. The single central spine is a structural element, with “Apex Vision” that provides a “panoramic view of the road and surroundings.”

The ‘Vette concept has 22-inch front and 23-inch rear wheels, measuring 40.7 inches tall, 85.8 inches wide, and 183.8 inches long. For comparison, the C8 is 48.6 inches tall, 85.5 inches wide (with mirrors), and 182.3 inches long. It also has an unspecified EV powertrain.

The top half of the new concept features the classic Corvette styling elements. It has a tapered rear window and familiar-looking wheel arches, all sitting above a highly technical lower half with integrated aerodynamics designed to channel air without needing wings or spoilers.

There’s also a sculpted underbody, reconfigurable aero surfaces, and deployable dorsal fins for track use. The spec sheet lists a pushrod suspension and a “race car inspired” chassis.

Michael Simcoe, GM’s senior vice president of global design, said the company wants its advanced design teams to create things beyond production vehicles. Its studios are designed to “push the envelope, challenge convention, and imagine what could be.”

“While they collaborate within our global design network on production and concept vehicle programs,” he said, “these teams are primarily tasked with imagining what mobility could look like five, 10, and even 20 years into the future and driving innovation for GM.”

Five years from now, coincidentally, would be a perfect time to launch the C9.
