One of the more interesting machines to come out of China recently is the Changan E07, which will be known as the Deepal E07 in Australia. It looks like a fast-back SUV, and it is. But it can also be a pickup truck. The rear roof sections slides back like a GMC Envoy XUV, Studebaker Wagonaire, or even Tesla Cybertruck. And then the rest of the tailgate flips down truck-style. It’s headed for more markets than just China, including Australia, which also gives us some idea of pricing for it.
Versatile And Powerful
The E07’s roof and lined cargo area are, unquestionably, the vehicle’s party piece. The entire roof section operates electrically, too, so it’s easy to use. It’s a fairly attractive-looking thing, with a clean, broad nose and smooth roofline. The body cladding is also impressively restrained for something that seems aimed at the same sort of lifestyle buyers that would cross-shop the Hyundai Santa Cruz and Subaru Outback. If anything, it could maybe use a little extra silliness to help give it some personality.
It could also use a little more payload capacity. Changan only rates the E07 to 661 pounds. The Hyundai Santa Cruz is rated to 1,411 pounds, and the Ford Maverick is rated to a maximum of 1,500 pounds. So E07 buyers should be mindful not to overload their vehicles.
The E07 does make up for some of its lackluster payload capacity with power. The single-motor, rear-drive model makes 338 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. Changan says it’ll get to 62 mph in 6.9 seconds. The dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version makes 590 horsepower and 476 pound-feet of torque. Its 0-62 mph estimated time is 3.9 seconds. Each also comes with a 90-kWh battery. It’s a nickel-manganese-cobalt lithium-ion unit with an 800-volt architecture. Depending on drivetrain, it will provide an estimated 389 to 399 miles of range. Those are on the NEDC test, and would certainly be lower on the EPA cycle.

Facelift Showdown: 2025 Ford Maverick Vs. 2025 Hyundai Santa Cruz
The last time we compared these two trucks, we went with the Ford. Now that they’ve both had a facelift for 2025, has our verdict changed?
Not Too Expensive
Changan’s brand in Australia, Deepal, is taking orders for the E07 now, and they are set to be delivered in the third-quarter of this year. The single-motor version starts at $64,900 in Australia, which comes to $38,843 in the US. That’s less than the cheapest turbocharged Hyundai Santa Cruz, though nearly $10,000 more than the cheapest turbocharged Ford Maverick. At $73,900, or $44,229 in the US, the dual-motor E07 still isn’t far off the turbocharged Santa Cruz models, or high-end Mavericks, while delivering far more power. Of course, there’s basically no chance the E07 will make it to the US, due to pre-exisiting tariffs from the Biden administration, as well as the Trump administration’s additional tariffs.
