Rivian Waits For R2 Arrival As Sales Decline

Rivian reported 8,640 vehicle deliveries of the R1T and R1S in the first quarter of 2025, representing a steep 36% decline compared to the same period in 2024 when it delivered 13,588 vehicles. For comparison, Tesla also saw a drop in sales to start the year, though it only amounted to 13%. Rivian built 14,611 vehicles during the first three months of 2025, but only delivered just under 60% of those to customers.

These results aren’t great, but they are inline with Rivian’s predicted outlook from the previous earnings call. The company said it would produce 14,000 vehicles and deliver 8,000. Following the announcement of its Q1 2025 numbers, Rivian reaffirmed that it will deliver 46,000 to 51,000 vehicles this year. In 2024, Rivian sold 51,579 vehicles.

Rivian

Rivian Automotive, Inc. is an American electric vehicle manufacturer launched in 2009 by R.J. Scaringe as Mainstream Motors before being renamed Avera Automotive and, later, Rivian in 2011. Despite initial plans to launch a sports car as its first product, Rivian changed focus to cater to the growing demand for adventure vehicles, launching the R1T and R1S in 2021 and 2022, respectively. As of the beginning of 2024, Rivian has sold a total of 82,572 EVs, with plans to grow this figure rapidly by launching new products like the R2 and R3.

The R2’s Arrival Could Change Everything, But Rivian Need To Get There First

Affordability (or lack thereof) might explain Rivian’s recent sales slump. The Rivian R1T pickup truck starts at $69,900, while the Rivian R1S SUV is $75,900. The American EV brand has already teased a smaller, more affordable model for $45,000 called the R2, but it is not slated to arrive until the first half of 2026.

We have little doubt that the R2 could create a sales boom for Rivian, but the company has to make it through all of 2025 to get to that point.

It’s going to be a wait.

So long as sales stay relatively level throughout 2025, Rivian can weather the storm until the R2 reaches production, and hopefully do what the Model 3 and Model Y did for Tesla: bring it to profitability. Assuming all goes to plan, Rivian will release an even smaller, more affordable model called the R3 some time in 2027.

Not All Doom And Gloom

As mentioned, Rivian predicted a sales slump to begin 2025, as-evidenced in the company’s Q4 statements in 2024.

“These lower-anticipated volumes are due to seasonality coupled with a challenging demand environment, partially driven by the impact of the fires in Los Angeles, which has historically been one of our largest markets,” Rivian CFO Claire McDonough said in February. McDonough also pointed out that Rivian overdelivered on its electric delivery van in Q4 2024, which meant there were fewer to deliver in Q1 2025.

Rivian’s Next Big Project Will Develop Small, Lightweight EVs

The automaker has spun off a new company called Also, Inc. to develop smaller EVs for better mobility.

Despite Rivian and Tesla seeing sales declines, Lucid Motors delivered 3,109 vehicles in the first quarter, a 58% year-over-year increase that can likely be attributed to the introduction of the Gravity, the company’s first SUV.
