Woman Blames Flip-Flops For Crashing Corvette Into Building

  • The Corvette jumped over a curb and slammed into the facade of a building.
  • Fortunately, the woman was not seriously injured and was treated at a hospital.
  • Police say they found the woman’s flip-flop pinned the car’s throttle.

A 2003 Chevrolet Corvette had an unexpected encounter with a cinder block wall last month in Eureka, Missouri, and the elderly driver is blaming the crash on her flip-flops. We suspect explaining that to an insurance adjuster might be a bit awkward, but according to local authorities, one of her flip-flops did, in fact, get stuck under the throttle.

The crash happened on March 22, when the driver lost control of her V8-powered Corvette. The car hopped a curb and barreled into the painted front of a building on Dreyer Avenue, leaving both the structure and the sports car worse for wear.

There’s no word on how fast the car was traveling at the time of the impact, but the damage done is pretty severe, and repairing the Corvette will be costly. Low-resolution photos shared from the scene, which look like they were snapped by a Nokia 3500, show the front bumper has been crushed, the hood badly bent, and the front quarter pushed upwards. There’s a good chance damage has also been done to the crash structure, the radiator, and perhaps the engine itself.

Speaking with local newspaper Leader , Eureka Police Capt. Michael Werges stated the woman was taken to be treated for minor injuries, before later being released.

“When we talked to her, she said she didn’t know what happened, her car just took off,” Werges said. “When she was being checked by paramedics, officers looked in the car. They noticed she didn’t have her shoe on. Her flip-flop was stuck, wedged under the pedal. We’re not exactly sure how that all happened, but it was very quick.”

Fortunately, no one else was injured, as according to the Police Captain, this area is usually “really busy.”

There are fewer and fewer C5-generation Chevrolet Corvettes on the roads, and it is painful to see one in this sorry state. Here’s hoping the insurer decides to repair it, but given that Corvettes of this era can sell for less than $20,000, we’re not getting our hopes up.
