What Happens When A Honda Engine Meets an Unhinged Rally Cage

  • The off-roader is powered by a Honda 2.4-liter four-cylinder and a 6-speed manual.
  • It rides on adjustable Ohlins coilovers and 15-inch wheels wrapped in mud tires.
  • Despite being road legal, the Nomad is far better suited to trails, dunes, and dirt.

Nobody needs an Ariel Nomad Tactical, but once you’ve seen one tearing through the dirt or bouncing over rocks like a caffeinated dune buggy, you might start to wonder how you’ve gone this long without it. The Nomad isn’t a practical purchase, and it’s definitely not something you’ll need for your daily commute.

But if you’re looking for a go-anywhere, laugh-out-loud fun, all-terrain toy, there’s really nothing else quite like it. And now, there’s one up for sale.

Watch: Supercharged K24 Ariel Nomad Is The Pinnacle Of Adventure Motoring

This 2017 Nomad Tactical was assembled by TMI AutoTech in Virginia and has a clean Oregon title. Sure, unless you have a swollen bank account, you may have to get on your hands and beg your significant other to let you buy it, but there’s really nothing else like this on the market. It can be driven on the road and provides sports car thrills, but is even better suited to off-road use, crawling over rocks and jumping over sand dunes.

Road-Legal Dirt Missile

Underneath the cage-like frame is a 2.4-liter K24 inline-four cylinder engine from Honda. Ariel did sell a supercharged version of the Nomad, but this one isn’t boosted. Nonetheless, it still screams, thanks in part to a custom exhaust system. Coupled to the four-cylinder is a six-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential at the rear axle.

As for practicality? Well, that’s not the Nomad Tactical’s strong suit. In addition to having no rear body panels, it doesn’t even have a proper roof and just a flimsy fabric soft top. However, it does have a windshield unlike some other Ariel models, so it can be driven without a helmet and goggles. Found in the cabin are lightweight fiberglass seats with racing harnesses and a Momo steering wheel.

The rig rolls on 15-inch wheels wrapped in 235/75 BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 tires and rides on adjustable Ohlins coilovers. The whole package looks like it was designed by someone who decided a rally car wasn’t unhinged enough. Despite being with the current owner since 2017, it’s only clocked 508 miles (817 kilometers), barely broken in for something meant to be launched off the nearest hillside.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can check out the Nomad Tactical listing over at Bring a Trailer right over here. Just don’t blame us when you start wondering how to explain it to your insurance agent.
