Kia Bringing A Trio Of New Cars To America Next Week

The New York Auto Show is next week, and Kia sounds like it will have one of the more interesting displays at the event. The company released the above teaser, which is pretty obviously the EV4 sedan. That’s not the only vehicle coming to the stand, though. Kia is promising three car debuts. Not only that, but it has left a few clues as to what those vehicles will be, saying that they will include everything “from sedan to SUV to something in between,” and that they “span distinct model lines.”

Kia

Kia is a South Korean automaker headquartered in Seoul. It was originally founded in 1944 as a bicycle manufacturer which later built small motorcycles, and Mazda-licensed trucks and cars. After building an assembly plant in th early 70s, the company also produced the Bisa range of cars until 1981 before coming to a half due to the political situation at the time. Production kicked off again in 1986 in partnership with Ford, and in 1992 the company started sellling cars in North America. Today it is the second-largest automaker in South Korea, right behind Hyundai.

One Really Obvious Reveal

One of these reveals is pretty easy to figure out. With the teaser image of the EV4 and mention of a sedan, it’s pretty clear one reveal will be the North American debut of the Kia EV4 sedan. Although it won’t be a vehicle we’ve never seen before, it should still be interesting, as Kia will likely finally share powertrain details for the compact electric car. It might even have information on pricing. Rumors have suggested that the EV4 could have some sporty features, such as the simulated gear shifts from the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and the updated Kia EV6 GT. We’re also hoping that Kia will confirm the hatchback version of the EV4 for the US.

A Couple Of More Mysterious Ones

That leaves two other vehicles: an SUV, and something between an SUV and a sedan. Kia further describes the “something in-between” as a vehicle that “offers a sporty and versatile approach in the compact car segment.” That sure sounds like a hatchback, and the company still hasn’t fully launched the K4 hatchback it announced last year. So that seems like a safe bet for our second mystery debut. Also, since Kia said that one of its three debuts would feature a “normally aspirated” powertrain, the K4 hatch fits perfectly. It does have us a bit worried, though, that Kia won’t offer at least the turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder from the K4 GT-Line Turbo.

That leaves just one last vehicle, which, by the process of elimination, must be an electric SUV. There are two distinct possibilities: EV3 and EV5. Both are electric SUVs, just with the former being closer to Niro-size, and the latter seemingly more Sportage-size. There’s more of a hole in the Kia line-up for the EV5, though the company has said previously it doesn’t intend on offering it in the US. The EV3, on the other hand, has already been confirmed for the US. Of course, it’s facing new hurdles in affordability, which would be important for the compact SUV. Kia reportedly was going to build it in Mexico, which is currently subject to tariffs from the Trump administration. So this one seems like a bit of a toss-up, leaning toward the EV3, that will just have to be settled next week.
