This Porsche 718 Could Be Hiding Audi’s Next TT

The Audi TT appears primed for a return and it could carry Porsche DNA

Spy photographers have caught the redesigned Porsche 718 Boxster on numerous occasions, but this one is worth paying attention too. While it looks fairly unremarkable, this could be our first glimpse at the next-generation Audi TT.

This remains to be seen, but there’s a decent amount of circumstantial evidence. In particular, the two prototypes belong to Audi instead of Porsche as they sport an “IN” license plate, referencing Ingolstadt. Spy shooters also noted they are “brand new and freshly registered” as they have an S in the license plate.

All of this begs the question of why would Audi have Porsche 718 Boxster prototypes? The most obvious answer is a new TT and basing it on the 718 would make a lot of sense.

Besides financial considerations, the Porsche bones could make for a better driver’s car. This would be a notable change as previous models had a lot in common with the Volkswagen Golf and the third-gen car was based on the MQB platform.

Assuming this is indeed an Audi TT mule, we can expect the production model to have unique styling that recalls its predecessors. However, we wouldn’t be surprised if the car was given a modern twist, especially considering an electric variant appears to be in the works.

Audi is staying tight-lipped, but CEO Gernot Döllner recently said “I believe Audi should have a sports car” as “that’s part of the brand DNA.” However, he suggested it might be a ways off as the company has to “find the right way, timing-wise, to integrate it into our portfolio.”

That time appears to be coming sooner rather than later, although a production model could be roughly two years off considering development appears to be just getting started.
