  • The car will use a Dallara chassis and a version of the Artura’s twin-turbocharged V6.
  • McLaren famously claimed victory at Le Mans in 1995 with the F1 GTR.
  • Ford is also set to join the LMDh class in 2027 and will race at Le Mans as well.

Spurred on by its ongoing success in Formula 1, McLaren has announced that it’s returning to the premiere class of endurance racing and will enter the 2027 WEC with an LMDh Hypercar.

The British brand, now under new ownership, has provided few details about its Hypercar plans. However, it’s thought to be working with Dallara and will use its chassis. In joining the LMDh class, McLaren will compete with Porsche, Acura, BMW, Cadillac, Alpine, Lamborghini, Ford and Genesis. It will also do battle with Toyota, Glickenhaus, Peugeot, Ferrari, Vanwall, Isotta Fraschini, and Aston Martin from the Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) category.

Just a single teaser image of McLaren’s car has been released which, given the timeframe the brand provided, is likely not the finished version. Key details include a classic prototype racer shape, a large rear wing, and intricate LED headlights. McLaren hopes to compete for outright victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2027, 32 years after its famous victory at the iconic race with the F1 GTR.

According to Motorsport, the McLaren LMDh Hypercar’s powertrain will be based on the twin-turbocharged V6 used in the Artura. As with all other cars competing in this class, this engine will be supplemented by a hybrid element.

McLaren Is Heading To Le Mans In 2027 With LMDh Hypercar

McLaren Racing chief executive Zak Brown has been hinting about the company’s return to endurance racing for several months. While speaking about a Hypercar project in mid-2024, he said it was a case of “more when than if.” He added that regulation changes that extend the lifecycle of LMDh and LMH cars by two years beyond 2027 had provided McLaren with “more breathing space” to field an entry.

This announcement comes just a few months after Ford revealed it too is working on an LMDh Hypercar for the 2027 season. The Blue Oval also wants to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans outright, something it hasn’t done since 1969, although it did claim victory in the LM GTE Pro class in 2016 with the second-gen Ford GT on the 50th anniversary of the GT40’s 1966 triumph, when it famously beat Ferrari.
