Sung Kang Reportedly Working On Yet Another Drifting Movie

Actor Sung Kang, perhaps best known for his portrayal of Mazda RX-7-driving Han Lue in the Fast and Furious series, has been pretty busy. Just a few years ago, he had his directorial debut, and since then, he has been working on a live-action adaptation of the Initial D series. It turns out, though, he may have another drifting project in the works.

Mazda

Mazda is a Japanese automaker founded in 1920 as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co and only started producing vehicles in 1931 when it made the Mazda-Go auto rickshaw. The Japanese automaker’s first official car arrived in May 1960 when the Mazda R360 launched, starting Mazda as we know it today, although the Mazda name was only adopted in 1984. Mazda has a rich history in motorsport, including the honor of being the only manufacturer to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a car not powered by a reciprocating engine.

Another Automotive Personality Is Involved

The news comes from Hypebeast‘s automotive outlet Hypedrive. According to the outlet, Sung Kang has been spotted in costume at a couple of drift events around the country. The outlet confirmed that he was there doing work for the unnamed drift movie, which apparently will be directed by him, just like the Initial D film. Additionally, Brian Scotto will also be working on the film. Scotto has headed a few different car magazines, and was involved with Hoonigan for years. He appeared on Hoonigan’s YouTube channel regularly, and he helped with the various Gymkhana videos featuring Ken Block.

It sounds as though this film will be centered around drifting in the US, and probably on a more organized and professional level. This would contrast with the illegal drifting in The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift and mountain racing of Initial D. Odds are, it will also be more grounded in reality than the Fast and Furious series. We could be in for some serious eye candy, though. Every Gymkhana video has been a spectacle of amazing driving and camera angles, which should carry over to Kang’s project if Scotto is on-board. We might even get some cool drone footage on the big screen. If you haven’t seen drone footage of drifting, take a look below at this sample from YouTube user Nicolas Udy, and you can thank us later.

Sung Kang’s A Real Car Person

Not every person that stars in a Fast and Furious film is actually into cars, but Kang sure is. Besides working on additional automotive films, he’s had his hand in creating some sweet custom cars. Two of them, a modified 1972 Ford Maverick, which according to Autoblog was a project done with a group of high school students, and a Datsun 240Z, have been turned into Hot Wheels cars. The latter, known as the Fugu Z, features an RB26 inline-six and also features in Gran Turismo 7.
