The writing’s on the wall – a fresh and battery-electric Volvo ES90 has been introduced as the new flagship model, replacing the S90 in the automaker’s lineup. We expected the Swedish marque to bring the axe to the not-so-popular executive sedan sooner or later – though we were leaning more on later – but a report has surfaced claiming the schedule for the S90’s discontinuation has been accelerated; this year is reportedly the S90’s final year.
According to Automotive News, citing an unnamed source familiar with Volvo’s plans, the company will be canceling orders for the S90 next year, which will make 2025 the final model year it will be on sale. The reason? The S90 sold in the US is actually built in China, and the most recent 125% tariff imposed by President Trump on products imported from the People’s Republic just made it a tad difficult to offer.
CarBuzz has reached out to Volvo to request comment on the matter and will update this article if a statement is issued.
First Wagons, Now Sedans?
The anonymous source added that the S90’s low sales in America prompted Volvo to just drop it from the lineup instead of dealing with the tariffs. The automaker will focus on its best-selling SUVs, the source said. Of note, Volvo only moved 1,364 units of the S90 last year, making it one of the least popular Volvo models in the US – though comparatively a huge seller compared to the now-discontinued wagons.

Volvo Goes Back To Its Ex To Try Get Its Mojo Back
The CEO who led the company to its biggest year in almost a century is out. Could this mean the reintegration of Polestar? It’s a long shot…
The thing is, the Volvo S90 is the automaker’s final combustion sedan in the US and ultimately the only low-slung model until the ES90 arrives. The Volvo S60’s fate was secured last year, with 2025 its final model year. If the report holds true and the S90 will also be discontinued after this year, Volvo won’t have any sedans left to sell to Americans – not that they seem to care anyway.
The ES90 Is Also At Risk
In line with the S90’s fate, its brand-spanking-new EV replacement is facing a similar issue. While the ES90 is a global model, it will be built in China. Does this affect the model’s arrival in the US? That, we have yet to see, but it is certainly at risk, just like the other Chinese-made Volvo, the EX30. The company has been ramping up another non-Chinese factory for the US-bound EX30, but for the ES90, that remains to be seen.
