Back in August of 2016, BMW did something special. It had taken the iconic but not well cared for BMW 507 Roadster discovered to be owned by Elvis and completely restored it back to the music icon’s original spec. That car was white with white hub caps, but now you can have the opposite of the Elvis car, the anti-Elvis, if you will.
BMW
BMW is a German luxury car and motorbike manufacturer and current owner of Mini, Rolls-Royce, and Alpina. With roots dating back to 1913 as Rapp Motorenwerke, it officially became Bayerische Motoren Werke in 1922 as a manufacturer of aircraft engines. BMW’s first car was built in 1928 when it built the Austin 7 under license from Dixi, which was called the BMW 3/15. BMW grew into a manufacturer of premium and luxury automobiles, launching iconic nameplates like the 3 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series, and is today known as one of the leading luxury automakers in the world, while the BMW M division is hailed as a leading manufacturer of performance cars.

What Is The BMW 507 Roadster?
It’s difficult to believe now, but long before the modern Z4 Roadster, back in the mid-1950s, BMW had yet to get into the roadster game in a serious way. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz was cleaning up shop with the lovely SL convertible. At the request of a well-off owner, BMW enlisted a new designer to come up with the now stunningly gorgeous 507, which was introduced in 1956. The first series of cars ran for about a year and included a larger gas tank.

The Most Beautiful BMW Ever Made Was A Big Flop
Sometimes, big plans fail in catastrophic ways. Others, such as this beautiful Bimmer, simply peter out without so much as a whimper.
This example is a late Series II, which means it gets a spare tire with a slightly smaller gas tank built around it. It was one of the last ten 507s to ever roll off of the production line. It sports a 150-hp V8 engine powering the rear wheels through a manual 4-speed gearbox. This one includes a paint-matched hardtop if you so desire, and a matching luggage set, as well. The car was also repainted last year, and it sports a lovely bright red leather and carpeted interior.

What Does This 507 Offer?
This 507 has been owned by well-known BMW collector, Goetz Pfafflin, who completed the 3,500-mile BMW Vintage Marathon of Europe in 2001 in the car. The auction listing mentions that the car’s engine, suspension, and brakes were rebuilt around 30 years ago in the late 1990s, before it was sold to a collector who owned it for more than 20 years.

Why This Rare V8 Roadster Almost Put BMW Out Of Business
The BMW 507 had a 148-horsepower V8 engine with a four-speed ZF manual.
In 2022, one 507 Roadster sold at Bonhams for more than $2 million, with two more selling for around $1.8 million, and a fourth recently sold for $2.1 million back in March of this year. We expect at least $2 million for this fairly recently reworked and freshened-up example owned by a renowned collector when the hammer drops on Saturday, May 17th.
