This unicorn may not win any beauty contests and is based on the Lada Samara, but it boasts a connection to Germany’s poshest brand

- This is a Lada Bohse Safari Landau from 1994 with 6,600 miles and it’s up for sale.
- It features Porsche-designed elements and some engine tuning from the German automaker.
- It combines a convertible top, a small truck bed, and four seats in a small footprint.
Lada might not exactly top the list when it comes to “luxury” or “quality,” but this particular model is something else entirely. Built in West Germany, it’s the product of a collaboration between multiple car companies, and the result is a bizarre mashup of a 2+2, a convertible, and a pickup truck—all packed into something smaller than a Subaru BRZ.
It’s a car that makes you wonder if someone lost a bet and just decided to throw everything in one car to see what would happen.

Bohse was a small coachbuilder in Germany. It took the Lada Samara compact and created what you see here, the Safari. Before it received the cars, Porsche had already had a hand in the model’s development. It ended up contributing to the engine tuning, the drivetrain, and even the overall design itself. That’s right, this car is related in that way to cars like the Mercedes-Benz E500 and the Audi RS2 Avant.
“The result was a vehicle that was far more advanced than anything else that Lada was producing at the time,” says AlphaCars from Massachusetts, which is handling the sale. This particular example might be the nicest one in existence, too. The paint is all original, as are the decals. The steering wheel still has the original Bohse badge, and the dash isn’t deformed as so many from this period usually are.
Take a deeper look at the overall design, and it’s clear that this car was meant to do it all. The front seats benefit from a removable sunroof panel. Behind them, a soft top comes off with just a few snaps and zips. At the back, there’s a small and very shallow bed, but it’s not the type we’d trust with very much cargo; however, underneath it there’s a deep and spacious trunk that should be enough for most of your needs.
The cabin is very simple: three pedals and a stick provide controls for motivation, physical knobs and switches are used for all other functions. The upholstery also looks like it’s in nearly perfect condition – as it should, since it only has 6,572 miles (about 10,600 km) on the odometer.
Here’s maybe the wildest part of this whole deal. According to AlphaCars, many parts are plentiful because production of the Lada Samara only ended very recently. Sure, it might not be as easy as rolling up to your local parts store, but online shopping certainly limits the impact.
Those interested in this truly unique car should check out the listing here. The current asking price is $28,995, which seems pretty high for an old front-wheel drive car nobody has heard of. But for a car as unique as this one, $29k isn’t exactly unheard of in the world of automotive oddities.
