Don’t Hold Your Breath For New Mitsubishi Models Landing On American Soil

Mitsubishi is the latest in a quickly expanding list of foreign automakers stopping shipments to the US. The brand is holding back vehicles, keeping them at home in port and avoiding shipping them to the US in response to the 25 percent tariff on vehicles that will boost prices of vehicles like the Outlander significantly when they land on US soil.

Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi is a Japanese automaker founded in 1870 and is part of the Mitsubishi Group and broader Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Mitsubishi Motors officially started producing passenger vehicles in 1917, the Mitsubishi Model-A, before building a legacy as the manufacturer of off-roaders like the Pajero. Mitsubishi established a strong presence in motorsport, with models like the Lancer Evolution competing in WRC and the Pajero Evolution taking multiple wins in the Dakar Rally. Its best-ever sales year in the USA was 2002, when it sold 345,915 cars.

“We are holding vehicles at the port until we have additional visibility on tariffs and decisions made on next steps,” a spokesperson for the brand told Automotive News. That came with a bold claim: “We have sufficient stock on the ground at dealers for the moment to not impact customer choice.”

Brand Has 100 Days Of Cars In US

Put the stress on “at the moment”, because, as AutoNews reports, the brand has around 100 days of sales already in the country ready to move. That’s 20,245 vehicles, if you want the exact figure. Once those numbers start to dwindle at all, expect prices to climb even more quickly than selection falls.

The Mitsubishi vehicles on dealer lots or in transit in the US won’t get higher sticker prices in advance of the tariffs, but Mitsubishi is cutting back discounts. What was $1,500 in customer cash or 2.99 percent financing is now $1,000 and 2.99 percent.

Expect those discounts to shrink fast once the market begins to adjust to the new conditions. 2021-style markups at dealers across the country and across all brands are possible.

Multiple Brands Have Paused US Shipments

While Mitsubishi shares development of the Outlander, its most popular model, with the US-built Nissan Rogue, all Mitsubishi models on sale today are built in Japan.

While Ferrari has announced it will raise prices, Infiniti, Lotus, JLR and its various brands, Audi, and Volkswagen have all announced that they are pausing shipments to the US. They are likely waiting for the Trump tariff situation to settle, as it seems like the landscape has been changing almost daily throughout April.
