No Scratch Or Ding Escapes Hertz’s New AI-Powered Tunnel

  • AI scanners will replace manual inspections at Hertz’ car rental stations in US airports.
  • The technology by UVeye uses cameras and sensors to scan the vehicle within seconds.
  • This move aims to cut costs, prevent unnoticed damage, and improve fleet upkeep.

Casual travelers in America who prefer renting vehicles from airports are about to experience a new way of inspection when picking up or dropping off their rental cars. Hertz has teamed up with Israeli tech startup UVeye to install high-tech vehicle scanners at major airport locations across the US, beginning with Atlanta.

var adpushup = window.adpushup = window.adpushup || {que:[]};
adpushup.que.push(function() {
if (adpushup.config.platform !== “DESKTOP”){
adpushup.triggerAd(“0f7e3106-c4d6-4db4-8135-c508879a76f8”);
} else {

}
});

More: Dealers Use AI Scanner To Detect Car Problems In Seconds

UVeye, the company behind AI-driven vehicle inspection systems, is already used by hundreds of dealerships across the US to help check customer cars faster and more efficiently. These tunnel-like scanners, featuring integrated lights, cameras, and sensors, will now replace the tedious, manual inspections Hertz typically uses during drop-offs.

Speed and Accuracy in Vehicle Inspections

Known as the “MRI for vehicles,” the system is touted as providing unparalleled speed and accuracy in detecting mechanical and cosmetic issues. In just seconds, the scanners examine the bodywork, glass, underbody, and tires. The digital data collected is then compared to the vehicle’s original condition report, identifying any changes that might have occurred.

While Hertz claims the system will “enhance the frequency, accuracy, and efficiency” of its vehicle maintenance, the real advantage for the rental giant is likely making sure customers are held accountable for damage that might go unnoticed in a manual inspection. This is especially important at airport locations where previous checks weren’t always as thorough, allowing some minor dents and chips to slip through the cracks.

Hertz plans to roll out over 100 UVeye systems across its major airport locations in the US by the end of this year. The first scanner has already been installed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Georgia.

Once the vehicle is returned, the customer gets a detailed inspection report sent straight to their smartphone. This eliminates the need for photos at pick-up and ensures more transparency throughout the process. UVeye’s tire treadwear system will also alert staff when it’s time for a tire replacement, spotting uneven wear and potential defects.

var adpushup = window.adpushup = window.adpushup || {que:[]};
adpushup.que.push(function() {
if (adpushup.config.platform !== “DESKTOP”){
adpushup.triggerAd(“bb7964e9-07de-4b06-a83e-ead35079d53c”);
} else {
adpushup.triggerAd(“9b1169d9-7a89-4971-a77f-1397f7588751”);
}
});

More: Billionaire Quietly Bought Into Hertz And Sent Its Stock To The Moon

With a fleet of more than half a million vehicles worldwide, Hertz says maintaining them is a “critical priority.” By implementing AI-based scanning systems, the company hopes to improve efficiency and save on resources in the long run, all while potentially generating more revenue. It’s worth noting that Hertz posted a $2.9 billion loss in 2024, primarily due to the depreciation of its EV fleet.

Besides Hertz, other major rental car companies, including Enterprise and Avis, are considering adopting similar scanning technology at their locations in the near future.

Will It Scan Your Wallet Too?

var adpushup = window.adpushup = window.adpushup || {que:[]};
adpushup.que.push(function() {
if (adpushup.config.platform !== “DESKTOP”){
adpushup.triggerAd(“b25ecba7-3bbb-4ea7-a3a8-dbea91695c07”);
} else {
adpushup.triggerAd(“e46c436a-adeb-4b5e-a2c7-56bc36561c10”);
}
});

While Hertz emphasizes efficiency as the primary goal, it also highlights the importance of “transparency for customers”. What does that mean? Well, we’ll have to see it in practice, but if Hertz starts using these scanners to spot every little nick and scuff, customers might quickly find themselves on the hook for damage they never even knew existed.

Those tiny scratches on the rear bumper you barely noticed? They’ll likely be flagged by these AI systems, ensuring Hertz’s bottom line gets a little boost while your wallet gets a little lighter. It’s great for the company, but less so for travelers, who may feel like they’re constantly under the scrutiny of a robotic tattletale.
