One Of Porsche’s Greatest Race Cars Is Road Legal And For Sale

Porsche is a rare car manufacturer in that it not only has legendary road-going sports cars, but race cars, too. Among the most famous and valuable are its endurance racers, which have netted the company 18 overall wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In the late 1980s, Porsche’s Group C weapon of choice was the 962C. The car took back-to-back wins at the French endurance race, and many of them were campaigned around the world in the 1980s. One of those cars was this privateer variation, a Porsche Kremer 962C CK6. While it didn’t win Le Mans, it has some other claims to fame. It also has another particularly exciting feature: it’s street legal.

Porsche

Porsche is a German sports car manufacturer and part of the broader Volkswagen Group since August 2012. Founded in 1931 by Ferdinand Porsche, the brand is most famous for the 911 line of sports cars, which first launched in September 1963. But it was the Porsche 356 that came first, and subsequently, Porsche has expanded its model lineup to include a variety of sports cars, supercars, SUVs, sedans, and even EVs. Porsche has a rich history in motorsport, with 19 outright Le Mans victories to its name, among various other titles.

British classic and sports car dealer Joe Macari is selling this particular 962C. It was built in 1988, and raced throughout Europe that year, including the 1988 24 Hours of Le Mans. At that event, it finished ninth overall. At the end of the year, it competed in an IMSA World Challenge race where both Mario and Michael Andretti were behind the wheel, and it took sixth.

This car isn’t the same as a factory Porsche 962C, featuring chassis changes from Kremer such as honeycomb aluminum structures. It is still a Porsche, and so sitting in the middle is a flat-six paired to a couple of turbochargers. Joe Macari says that it produces 750 horsepower, which is sent to the rear via a five-speed manual transmission. Of course, the car is also a bit different from other 962Cs since it’s road legal. The most recent owner, the third private owner after Kremer Racing retired it and sold it, had the car converted and registered for road use in the UK in 2022. Among the changes made were improved engine cooling, a hand brake, an intercom for occupants, and traction control.

And you can own it.

Surprisingly, there are a few of these race cars that can roam public streets. A European tuning company called Koenig, bought a trio of 962Cs in the 1990s to convert for road use and sale to customers. Those models received some bodywork and lighting changes, plus new suspension tuning to make them both street legal and more comfortable. One of those examples was listed for $995,000 a few years ago. The car being sold by Joe Macari, as a full race car with racing history, is being offered for £999,950. That’s a bit more than $1.3 million.
